As a writer I have grown a massive amount! For the most part, I feel confident handing in a paper after taking this course. Writing was never my strong point, it always threw me off and I never truly understood what to do to make it an A+ paper. This course, along with the professor was an amazing help. Most likely I will not continue writing on here, but I did enjoy it for the course. I felt that it refreshed my memory and kept me writing so I knew what I was doing. It was a good tecnique to reword the stories, ect. that we worked on in class. There truly are no cons to blogging, it only takes a few minutes of your time and it is a great help. I would not mind doing this again because I actually feel I learned from it.

Blog #8 sonnet
My strength is finally breaking.
A beautiful girl so innocent and pure,
How could such an amazing life be taken?
I think of you and couldn't ever have asked for more.
I go on knowing that your watching over me,
Just living my life day by day
I hope everything I say and do you can see.
But it will get easier, at least that's what they say.
My heart will always hold a spot for you
Everyone will remember you always and forever,
And I'll be thinking of you until I'm up there too.
Your beautiful soul I will always treasure.
You are now an angel only here in spirit,
But I'll continue to talk to you, because I know you can hear it.

The Vietnam war is very heart-wrenching to me because of the fact my grandfather faught in it. This war has given him PTSD, post traumatic stress disorder. Loud noises or explotions startle him because of the terrible memories it brings back from fighting. The Vietnam War was mainly because of the fight to prevent the spread of communism. Our country decided to join to help the military by sending aid to other countries being invaded. My grandfather has told me that this war reminded him of previous ones because of he fact that our country kept invading spaces that were unknown and unclarified to us. Communism is the biggest cause of this war which is what always first comes to mind when I think of it.

Are we able to break free of our cultural heritage? What are the ways society tries to keep us in line? How do some people break free? Is there a danger in disregarding societal norms? Are there benefits?
Anyone can technically "break free" of their cultural heritage if thats what they want to do. However, at the end of the day you will always still be that heritage and have that background. Society does what it can to keep us in line by following cultural norms and practicing their religion, yet it doesn't mean that everyone does what they must. Some people may not want to grow up in a certain enviornment and they break away. Depending on the cultural, there definitly could be danger to yourself if you are one of the people who choose to break free of your cultural heritage1

Boyle made me see that what happened in this story was absoluely terrible. There is other ways to get rid of an unwanted child then throwing a baby down a garbage shoot! First off, if you protect yourself and are smart that is the first way to prevent having a child. Other ways are adoption, or abortion. Although these are both touchy subjects, they are both better then torture! If China truly could not handle it she should have done something legal to get rid of the poor child. Of course China and Jeremy are condemned by their peers after reading such a heart-wrenching story! There is no explination for doing something so low and disgusting like what these two did.

Did reading your peers essays unravel or reinforce your own essay's arguments?
By reading my peers essays it helped me get other points of view on how to write. I looked at little things like transition words to be able to make my paper even better as well. Also I liked seeing the other side to the topic and seeing how people could argue my paper. I needed a good amount of changed to be made to my essay. They really helped by reading and correcting my mistakes.

A persons' cultural heritage can completely make or break who they are. How you are raised plays a big role in who you grow up to become. For example, at family gatherings and parties that a family has, if there is constantly alcohol and you are being offered a drink at all of these you may think that theres nothing wrong with drinking around your own friends as well. If your family is so against it and never offers a drink and make sure that you know how against it they are, when you go out you will have your parents words in your head and you will know right from wrong. Kids seem to grow up being who their parents are. This shows that depending on your family and their culutre, it plays a huge part in who you are. Drinking can either be nothing in a culture, or it can become a serious problem.

I believe that "I Stand Here Ironing" was a very good story. It had emotion and interest in it. I liked reading it because you truly didn't know what would happen next. The story was a bit sad to see a family so torn up like that. However, it ended good and it made me realize to always rememer what i have and how happy and thankful I am to have it.

blog #1 Man in the well
I chose to write about the story "The Man in the Well" because I felt that it had many different emotions and opinions on what was going on. I liked how it was one of those stories that you have to read multiple times to really understand what was going on. It made me think and wonder what was going on in the childrens minds.
1. The psychological reality of children and adults is a deep well within themselves that they cannot see into.
2. Even in their later years, people may have trouble forgiving themselves for bad things they did when they were young.
3. Within groups, people may engage in conduct that is wilder, stranger, or more uncivilized than their usual behavior when alone.
4. Children may have difficulty sharing the perspective of another person.
5. We should be more compassionate toward people who are trapped.
6. When dealing with an adult, even a helpless one, children may have in their minds images of parental authority that affect how they treat the person.
7. People project their fears or suspicions onto others, even those who do not actually pose a threat to them.
8. Children may fail to understand when an adult is in danger.
9. Children are capable of conspiring with one another against the adult world.
10. People need to see one another's faces if they are to trust one another.
I felt that the most important theme out of the 10 of these was "The psychological reality of children and adults is a deep well within themselves that they cannot see into." The reason that I picked this one is because it seemed to be the most logical. While I read the story I thought that there seemed to be a hidden message behind it that you had to determine yourself. Once I read the themes and saw this one, it made a lot of sence to me. Adults and children have two completely different lifestyles and thoughts and although they can sometimes understand one another, they view life in completely different ways. Children look at adults and can't completely read them or comprehend the way they think. If an adult walked past this well and heard the man, their first reaction would be to get help and do something to save him. Children get scared because they didn't really understand what happened to the man and they most likely weren't sure what to do. Their maturity isn't as high as an adults so they thought keeping this a secret would be the best idea.
This stuck out to be the next most important to me because of that fact that we all have regrets in life. Most of us have that one thing we've done that we always think about and can't let it go. The narrator of this story clearly was never comfertable with the situation. Even when he was little and discorvered this man in the well it was clear that at some points he wanted to get help because he was scared. Not getting help most likely made that man die. That's at least what I got out of reading this! As he grows up he has to always relive that moment and hold that terrible memory with him. That is one thing that is so important in life because doing something terrible can haunt you for years and start to tear you apart emotionally.
This third pick, was because through teenage years I've watched people change because of the peers they were around. Personal expieriance is always the best way to link yourself to a story. The narrator seemed as if he wanted to help this poor innocent man, yet everyone around him refused. He changed what his heart and mind said because of what other people thought and wanted. When your younger especially, you need to learn and remember to always be yourself. Letting the people you engage in conversation with change you and make you who you are is one of the worst things you can do. In the end, when your alone, that's who you are. Your always going to have the roots of where you came from. This is why its so important to not let people affect your personality.
"Children may have difficulty sharing the perspective of another person." This quote stuck out to me to be more important then other themes because as you get older is when you really know who you are and you start to understand yourself and other people. You start to learn more about life and trust and how to treat other people. When a situation like this appeared, the kids seemed like they didn't understand if this man was really in danger or if he was just a stranger that could have tried to harm them. They were terrified when he learned their names which shows us they clearly were scared of him.
I feel as if 'we should have more compassion to people who are trapped' explains itself. Whenever someone is in danger I wouldn't even double think if I should help them or not. It becomes common sence and common courtesy to me. The children may not have understood, but I truly don't believe theres any reason why they shouldn't of helped save this poor man.
This next theme was on the less important side for this particular story. They heard this helpless man and didn't really think of him as anything other than helpless. I feel like they assumed since he was an adult that couldn't do anything they didn't have to really treat him with respect. Also, if they grew up with a bad family that never really cared or helped them, they could have took after that and started treating people the same way which is why they didn't help the man.
The theme 'people project their fears or suspicions onto others, even those who do not actually pose a threat to them' is another less important theme for this story. Although the story did show fear with the children as well as the man, there was a bit of threat from the man to the kids. He tried to scare them and get them a bit freaked out once he realized they weren't going to help him.
Children may fail to understand when an adult is in anger is very logical in some situations, but in this story the kids were specifically told to get help. Even if they didn't get what was going on there is no reason why they didn't listen and grab one of their parents for some help. This theme didn't relate to much to the story because it seems to me that no matter what age you are, if someone is begging for help, you should have the respect and courtesy to help!
Children are capable of conspiring with one another against the adult world is very true! They always seem to gang up because it's more "fun" to them and they want to stick together for eachother. Although this theme makes very much sense, it isn't that relevant to the story and the other ones seemed much more important.
I do not agree with this last theme which is why I made it last. In order to trust you don't necissarily need to see the person face to face. Trust is formed however you make it, not by looking at one another. If you were to meet someone online and started really getting to know them and talking to them more and more every day you could eventually trust the person because they're still a big part of your life. Each theme in the order I wrote, to me, was important to semi-important to nothing.

I'm hoping that I get through all my college courses with an A average. All through highschool I did very well, but I know that in college 'well' isn't enough. I'm glad that I'm here at Stockton College because I really am enjoying it and love it. Hopefully things will keep going how they are now! My toughest class will most likely be this one because I'm not the best with research papers and writing. I will most likely have to try a lot harder and study a lot more for this class more so than any others.
